We've all heard about it, and some of the older people have lived through it, the evolution of mobile media storage. It started out long ago and has now grown into the DVD format we have today, or has it? The DVD format has a rival and it's in the form of Blu-Ray.
The two have been going at it for about a year now, but I always considered DVDs to be in the lead. Most people I know have DVDs and the appropiate players, but now Blockbuster has shifted the balance. They have done so by exclusively renting out HD movies in only Blu-Ray at 1,450 stores. Talk about an overhaul this would do it.
You may wonder why Blockbuster was able to cause such a rift? Well Blockbuster caters to alot of people! More than any other rental store around and with the ever-increasing popularity of HD, many people will be forced to get only Blu-Ray movies or go somewhere else. If there is a downside to Blu-Ray it is expensive.
There are alot of things that can happen because of this shift: One, Blockbuster loses alot of customers because they don't want to pay the higher price nor want to pay for the very expensive player (used to be $1,000, is now $499). Two, the Blu-Ray industry explodes and becomes the new big thing, thus creating a new era in the fabric of history of media storage. Ultimately killing the DVD format as we know it.
Maybe some other factor will come into play and a third option will come out and be successful. Who knows? Let me know what you think.
